A Stylist's Guide to Denim [Autumn Edition]

There’s no denying it: the mornings are getting colder; the jackets are coming out the closet and, despite summer's hit and miss weather, it was often too hot to wear denim. As autumn announces its arrival with frost warnings on our dashboards and the unfamiliar hum of the central heating, we’re excited to revisit our love for the iconic cotton fabric. Exploring this seasons styles, washes and designs is the best way to reignite your love with wrapping up.

We’ve asked our resident stylist Alex to impart his best tips for wearing denim this autumn. He's provided us with a few looks to inspire us to dive into the world of new season pieces from our favourite designer brands.

For the first look, I’ve paired two different denim washes together: one in a light blue and one in black. The distressed denim jacket contrasts the smart black jeans, which are both from Balmain.

I’ve layered the jacket over the top of a brick-red Ami roll neck knit to add a pop of colour which mirrors the red details on the Louboutin boots and tote bag. For the finishing touch add a Vivienne Westwood necklace to complete this elevated-casual look.

For the second look, I began with the Valentino shirt which is made from a series of intricately woven patches to create a camo design in a variety of shades of indigo. I’ve paired the shirt with a pair of dark blue Dsquared jeans which compliments the shirt's print and, underneath the shirt, I’ve layered the black Dsquared ‘Icon’ t-shirt. For footwear, the sleek black Buscemi sneakers are a great choice for a relaxed outfit. Lastly, I’ve added a côte&ciel crossbody bag for an easy way to carry your essentials and finished the look with a chunky Alexander McQueen ring.

For the first women's look, I started with one of my favourite pieces from this season's Off-White collection: the Baggy Jeans. These jeans are the perfect transitional denim piece with their distressed patches and intricate embroidery detail on the back. I decided to pair them with another favourite piece of mine the MM6 Padded Hoodie, which is perfect for the cooler autumn days. Golden Goose sneakers work well with this relaxed look and when there is a break in the clouds, a pair of sunglasses is essential and this circular design from Fendi work perfectly. Lastly, I’ve added the PVC Off White bag and a pair of Isabel Marant socks to complete the look.

For the second look, I’ve opted for more layers which is a great way to approach getting dressed when the weather is liable to change. Starting with the denim element, I chose the Burberry deer trim jeans which have a white side stripe and are a little different from a classic black jean. On the top half, I’ve put the Golden Goose gilet over the Burberry Horseferry knit; using some more transitional pieces for your Autumn/Winter rotation. Fall was made for boots and these MM6 boots are a chic choice. Finally, for accessories, a Bao Bao tote bag and Isabel Marant bracelet complete this outfit.
