How to wear athleisure? Like it’s 1993.
Recently my Instagram explore page has been filled with 90s style throwbacks: from Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic Oscars pink dress to colourful street style images – bucket hat anyone? It’s a style obsession that’s swept over us as we binge our favourite 90’s TV shows and cult films on Netflix. Whether its intentional or not our consumption of nostalgic programming and images has left us taking style queues from vintage photographs as much as the latest catwalk shows. What better way, then, to wear athleisure than like it’s 1993?
Polo Ralph Lauren’s new Hi-Tech collection is inspired by his very own Fall 1993 collection. While we’re certainly nostalgic for the past, fashion must move forward and Ralph has updated the signature pieces from this collection with modernized cuts and fresh styling. This collection certainly can’t be deemed dull: and neither were the 90’s. The collection’s bright, poppy colours are the perfect antidote to the encroaching winter weather.
Don’t be fooled: you don’t have to be athletic to sport the collection, most of us are looking gym ready despite having lapsed on our membership, (there’s no judgement here). The best way to wear the collection of sweatshirts, jackets and jumpers is layering – a real homage to the 90’s. Ralph’s updated cuts won’t leave you looking stuck in the past, so be creative with mixing pieces.
The great thing about styling this collection is that you can mix it with pieces from your own wardrobe, giving energy to your winter wardrobe that has a habit of looking tired when we dig into it after summer’s over.
Ralph Lauren’s collection is inspired by the past but looks toward the future. It’s the 90’s for a new era.
