So far there has been a lot of fashion, a lot of wow moments and a lot of people dressed up; poised to have their outfits catalogued by the photographers that await them outside shows. The designers have spent the last few months putting together fashion spectacles that await the buyers, bundled onto benches, waiting to be impressed. Now, halfway through the month, it feels like so much has happened. It has. And yet – there’s two whole weeks of fashion frivolity, late nights and to-go coffees still to transpire. No time like the present then to look back at the highlights from New York and London as the buyers and front row glitterati attend the third leg of the tour that predicates AW19’s trends. There is much to discuss.
We’ve curated our 5 favourite trends that we’ve seen on the catwalks. Easy, simple ideas that will be wearable when winter comes (and you might already have in your closet).
Trend 01 – The “Dad” Coat
Over the past 18months, the #dadsneaker trend has exploded: big, gawky sneakers have reigned supreme. Now, there’s a dad coat to match. Intentionally over-sized and with larger than life lapels this is the way to wear your outerwear come autumn. The more it looks like your dad would have worn it in the ’90s, the better. Whether you wear it over an LBD or a shirt and skirt we’ll leave the logistics up to you.Embed from Getty Images
Trend 02 – Smarten Two-Pieces
The popularity of the two-piece shows little sign of waning, however, the upgrade just got sophisticated. Partywear has been shunned in favour of two pieces that mean business. Whether that’s structured, cut-away tweed or a mustard yellow trench and paper bag trousers. Make sure that your matching sets are a little more grown up.Embed from Getty Images
Trend 03 – Oversized Check
The bigger the check the better – any hue will do. On your coat, on your trousers, feel free to clash or match, be bold or keep the palette classic. If this seems a little daunting, try it on a coat with a monochrome outfit or add a bold check into your accessories; a tote bag or a scarf will work well.
Trend 04 – Tudor Sleeves
Sleeves show absolutely no sign of coming back down to earth. Those of the Tudor variety are particularly stylish. The big, romantic sleeves are coming in many guises, steer clear of anything too clingy and embrace the freedom such a decedent cut brings. Wear a white blouse with the with raw-edged denim if you’re worried about looking ‘too much’, however taking this trend to your eveningwear will have you feeling like the belle of the ball.Embed from Getty Images
Trend 05 – Fluffy Coats
A faux fur coat is nothing new in terms of Autumn/Winter dressing. The suggestion this time is to go maximalist, anything demure or overly ‘tasteful’ can find its home at the back of your closet. Opt for something opulent.Embed from Getty Images
