Trendspotting: Hawaiian Shirts are Back
The 90s has a lot of fashion fads to its name: too much hair gel, combat trousers, tube tops, sparkly lip gloss and butterfly hair clips, to name a few. While some of the more memorable styles that graced the decade can remain firmly as nostalgic favourites (never to be relived) it would seem the Hawaiian shirt is no longer a relic, but a legitimate fashion trend. Think 90’s Leo for inspiration and take style ques brands such as from Polo Ralph Lauren, Amiri and Stella McCartney for shirts that embody the summer season.
The kind you’d think of when we say ‘Hawaiian Shirt’. However, with brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Amiri creating versions they’re cool, not cringe. Off-White’s shirt uses an “impressionist” painting to create a sky-blue design, while Amiri’s 100% silk interpretation is so soft we don't have the vocabulary to describe it (style note: it makes the ideal partner for the brand’s distressed denim).
The best flowers in the show go to this assortment from Stella McCartney, Dsquared2 and Neil Barrett. If you’re looking to go all-out we’d advise doing so in McCartney, with Neil Barrett offering up a digital alternative that allows you to embrace botanicals with a modern twist.
Nothing so far encouraged you to #throwback your summer wear? Try one of these pieces that have approached the summery shirt trend a little differently - Vivienne Westwood’s eponymous label is covered seam to seam in her signature scrawls and slogans while Valentino capitalises on the popularity of the #logomania trend with its all over VLTN design.
